Avatar – Your design of you or the character you create on Secondlife and other video games.  Can be human or other at times depending on game and your creation.

SL – Abrev. for Secondlife

RL – In Secondlife you will often see people refer to real world or real life as RL.

Sim – The land in Secondlife.  Land in Secondlife is bought and sold either by players or Linden Labs themselves.  For more information on this term click on the Secondlife.com link above.

Skybox – Building or House floating above the land in Secondlife.

Flying – In Secondlife although there are flying objects, usually the term to fly refers to the avatar flying through the air as a bird.

Animations – In Secondlife your avatar already can move about but animations help your avatar to do a lot more like lay down to read a book with your legs swinging back and forth while you lay on your belly or pose for pictures with your best friends.

Hunts – Secondlife has a variety of hunts.  You may be hunting for fish or hunting for prizes.  Hunts can also be sim wide, meaning the hunt item you are looking for will only be found on the sim hosting the hunt.  Hunts can also be Secondlife grid wide, which means when you find a sign in Secondlife telling you of a grid wide hunt for example Zombie Popcorn Hunt.  You click on the sign, which gives you instructions for group joining if needed, what you will be looking for and a Landmark to teleport you to the starting point.  From the starting point you find the item mentioned.  When you find the item you click on it to take it, you will find it in your inventory with a new landmark for your second location somewhere in Secondlife.  This may seem difficult to understand if you are new to all this but there are plenty of people inside of the game world to help you understand what to do.

Teleport – A way of  travel in which your avatar moves from one place to another through space.  Traveling from one sim on Secondlife to another or to your home location, a friends location and many other places.

Landmark – A location, such as on a map but it’s really a url to guide you to the next point in the game.  Landmarks are often kept in inventory for future travel if your avatar is to return to the same location or new location.

Grid wide – A term used to describe lands in Secondlife.  The whole game of Secondlife is on a grid or in real world terms a computer map.

Lag – A term used when motion on a particular sim is causing your avatar to be unable to move or to move in slow motion.  It is often caused by too many scripts being used on a sim or because other avatars are wearing items that have scripts in them.  High script count is often the problem.

Scripts – A programming language which gives the computer an instruction to help an avatar with movement for example.  For a better description click here.
